ITS and COLRS have updated the Kaltura video player and functionality in Canvas. We wanted to share with you some of the changes that you can expect to see.

How to find My Media

You can still access your videos and the "Add New" button from your course navigation by clicking on "My Media" or by clicking on your profile picture in the blue, global menu and choosing "My Media."

Additionally, you can access My Media by clicking on the My Media icon in the blue, global menu from any Canvas page (icon appears as a folder with a play button in the middle).

Video player upgrade

When you or your students are viewing a video in a Canvas page, assignment, etc., the video player will look different. While much of the functionality remains the same, we wanted to be sure to explain what you are likely to see in case it looks unfamiliar:

New Kaltura video player with numbers next to each button. Descriptions of button functions are below the screenshot.
  1. Search: Allows a viewer to search for keywords in the transcript.
  2. Transcript: Opens and closes the transcript. When the transcript is open, you can click on the kebab menu (three dots) to turn the transcript into a popout window.
  3. Information: Shows the name of the video, who owns the video (by NetID), the number of views, and when it was created.
  4. Play/Pause: Starts and stops the video.
  5. Seek Backwards: Jumps back in the video 10 seconds
  6. Seek Forwards: Jumps forward in the video 10 seconds
  7. Timestamp: Shows how much time has passed in the video, as well as how long the video is
  8. Volume: Controls the volume on the video. If this button is crossed out, the video is muted. If this button cannot be clicked, the video has no audio.
  9. Closed Captions: Turns the closed captions on and off. If there is a line through this button, the captions are off. If this button cannot be clicked, there are no captions for the video.
  10. Picture in Picture: Allows the video to be watched while in other tabs. The video will default to the lower right corner, but the video can be moved around the screen. You can click on this button again to exit picture in picture mode.
  11. Fullscreen: Makes the video fullscreen. You can click this button again or click the "Esc" key on your keyboard to exit fullscreen mode.
  12. UIS: Takes users to the UIS website homepage.

Considerations for adding a video to a course

The most notable change is the way the transcript appears with the video. In the old version of the player, the transcript widget was underneath the video. With the new transcript functionality, the transcript will either appear next to or on top of the video, depending on what size you choose when bringing the video into your course.

In the large video from Canvas, the transcript is on the right side of the video. In the medium video, the transcript is on top of the video.

Because of this new functionality, we recommend that you choose Large as the size of your Kaltura video. If you have never done that before, please take the following steps:

  1. Navigate to the place in Canvas where you want your video to be.
  2. Click the Kaltura icon in the toolbar above the textbox (looks like a rainbow star burst).
  3. When you see your list of videos, next to the word "Select" is an arrow. Click the arrow instead of the Select button.
  4. From the options listed, choose Large.
  5. Save the page.

Next steps

If you do not yet see these changes, that's okay! We anticipate that it will take some time for the player to fully update.

If the videos in your courses are not working after this update, please let us know. We will work with you to ensure that your videos are up and running as soon as possible.

There is nothing different that you need to do in order to record a video using Kaltura Capture or edit any video settings/captions after recording. All of those functions remain the same. If anything changes, we will be sure to let you know right away.
