It’s scholarship application time! Let’s be honest; scholarships are among the most important parts of your college experience, but earning the scholarship by completing the application and personal statement is not exactly easy or fun. This handout reviews the UIS Donor-Funded Institutional Scholarship Application to make that process a little easier!

What is the UIS Donor-Funded Institutional Scholarship?

UIS offers hundreds of thousands of dollars in donor-funded scholarships to enrolled ��ýs every year. In fact, “UIS awarded over $990,000 in donor scholarships to approximately 300 students for the 2023-24 academic year.”[1] You can find the shared application for all of these scholarships on the UIS website. Students have until February 15^th each year to complete their submission for the following academic year, which includes several parts:

Many of the questions are easy-to-answer drop down menus or short responses. Besides giving you space to share details about yourself, the application also helps you indicate whether you qualify for scholarships that have specific requirements, like a particular major, membership, or achievement. This handout will concentrate on the writing portions of the application in the Student Information section, which includes the Personal Narrative, Field of Study, Academic/Career Goals, and An Experience at UIS.

Personal Narrative

The personal narrative is your opportunity to share details about your “personal, educational, and vocational goals” – basically, who are you, and what do you want out of life? This space also allows you to discuss remarkable aspects of your academic experience, such as “awards, honors, and other student activities.” Basically, what have you done that can impress the people reviewing your application, and how can you point toward the scholarships you qualify for?

The online application requires that the narrative be at least 250 words long, but caps the length at 750 words. To write within this length, you should plan ahead carefully. You don’t want to include too much, and you want it all to flow and make sense. The following is some advice you can use to write a personal narrative that hits all the marks.

How to Begin a Personal Narrative

Kick things off with a strong, memorable first impression by grabbing their attention right away
Start with a personal anecdote you can use as the core thematic thread which points toward your goals
Share ideas that show the pursuit of success through struggle, your persistence and grit and dedication

How to Develop Ideas in a Personal Narrative

Explain the experiences you’ve chosen to include, with relevant detail and description
Reflect on how these experiences have shaped you, or helped you push toward your goals
Connect everything together to show who you are, what you’ve done, and where you’re going

How to Finish a Personal Narrative

Leave your reader with a solid, singular idea they’ll remember out of all the narratives they’ve read
Pull the personal anecdote back in as the core thematic element driving the narrative
Make sure to have shown how you’ve persisted through the struggle; you’re on the path to success

Field of Study

The second writing section of the scholarship application asks you to explain “How I chose my field of study.” Your response will likely be briefer than the personal narrative, but you should take some time to examine the reasons why you chose your major. Consider these questions to get started:

What about this field of study interests me? In what ways?
Who from this field of study might have influenced my academic goals? How?
When did you know this was your chosen field of study? Why?

Academic/Career Goals

The third writing section of the scholarship application asks: “How do your recent educational experiences fit into your future academic or career goals?” Specifically, this section wants you to apply “your past accomplishments to your future goals.” To do this effectively, you’ll want to think back to your work in a class you took recently. Give an example of when your coursework connected to your future academic and employment goals. This can include:

Lab work or research
Essay or other project
Group project or presentation
Reflection work
Hands-on learning
Volunteering experience

An Experience at UIS

The last writing section of the scholarship application gives space for you to describe something you’ve experienced at UIS. The sky’s the limit as far as what you may want to share, but try to make it matter in the context of the rest of your responses in the application. You also should look at whether you can use this story to indicate your eligibility for particular, restricted scholarships. In other words, this story should tell your readers something about you and your academic experiences and career goals. Here’s some examples of what that might look like:

This one time at UIS, my roommate and I . . .
During welcome week, I had the strangest experience where . . .
While working at my campus job at [X], I . . .
At the Student Union, I attended. . .
In my [X] class with Dr. [Y] one night, I . . .
Let me tell you about my first night in my dorm room where . . .

Closing Thoughts

Remember that the purpose of a scholarship application is to show how you benefit your institution, and how well you will represent your potential donors as the recipient of their funding. You’re an investment; help them see why they should invest in you and how their scholarship will pay off through your future successes.

Paragraph 2: Explain Why It Matters

In addition to the explicit thank you, another aspect of the scholarship thank you letter is to explain how these funds will impact your studies and your future: why it matters. To effectively explain, you will need to offer up some details about yourself, including your past, present, and future. Let’s unpack what might fit into each:

Your current situation
- your declared major and relevant studies
- what you enjoy in your free time (volunteering, interests, hobbies)
- whether you belong to any groups or clubs
Your goals
- what you hope you will achieve once completing college
- where you hope your career path will take you
- how this scholarship has paved the way or contributed to this future

Remember that you should keep your letter to one page, around 300-500 words total, so you can’t cover absolutely everything about who you are and what you want to do – focus on what you need to get your point across, and no more.

Paragraph 3: Close It Out

Your last paragraph should conclude your letter by restating your appreciation for the donor’s contribution to your future. Here are some sample phrasings you could use:

Once again, thank you for your generous donation to my academic success and future career.
Thank you, again, for selecting me for the [X] scholarship. I know I will make you proud.
I plan to make the most of the opportunities you have granted me through the [X] scholarship. Thank you.

Formatting

Professional letters have very specific guidelines for what to include and how it should look. On this page, we’ve provided a template you can use to build your specific scholarship thank you letter, with some annotations explaining these aspects in more detail. For the three paragraphs, write out what the first page of this handout describes.

[Your Name] [Your Address] [Your Contact Info]

[Date – formatted however it makes sense, but usually Month Day, Year] Dear [Thank You Letter Recipient(s)], Paragraph 1, (who are you? thank your donor): Introduce yourself and your background, such as your hometown and other personal details worth sharing. State the letter’s purpose, which should mention the scholarship you’ve received and an explicit thank you to your donor(s) for selecting you. Paragraph 2, (what have you done? what do you hope to do?): Talk about your academics, including your major, year, extracurricular involvement, special achievements, and plans for the future or other interests you feel are relevant to share. Paragraph 3, (close it out): Conclude with another “thank you” statement. Highlight the scholarship’s role in your future successes once you receive your degree and begin your career path. [Salutation]

This formatting assumes you are writing a separate document you will then attach in an email (as either a .pdf or a .docx file) to advancement@uis.edu. Make sure to label the file appropriately (for example, “X Scholarship Thank You Letter”). Also make sure to write a brief but professional email that outlines the reason for your correspondence, and directs the reader to the attached letter.

Checklist for Your Scholarship Thank You Letter

Do you have the formatting properly executed, with addresses, greetings, salutations, etc.?
- Have you clearly thanked your donor at multiple points within the letter?
- Have you given a sense of who you are, and what you hope to achieve as a result of these funds?
- Have you kept it to around one page, the preferred length? Should you find ways to trim, if not?
- Do you have any mistakes you need to fix in a quick proofreading/editing review?

What is the Summer Scholars Program?

The University of Illinois Springfield's (UIS) Summer Scholars Program offers incoming freshmen a unique opportunity to jumpstart their college experience by earning up to 6 college credits for free during the summer. Participants engage in on-campus activities and continue with remote learning, providing a comprehensive introduction to college life.

Summer Scholars Coursework

As a Summer Scholar, you will take two courses designed to strengthen your academic skills and prepare you for college-level work. These courses are tuition-free, allowing you to earn up to 6 college credits at no cost.

Required Course:

UNI 103 Academic Success Workshop
- Develop essential college skills, including time management, study strategies, and critical thinking.
- Learn how to navigate campus resources and set yourself up for success.

*All students will be enrolled in UNI 103 Academic Success Workshop.

Courses Offered:

MAT 111 Quantitative Reasoning
- Develop competency in problem solving and analysis
ENG 101 Rhetoric and College Writing
- Develop strong writing and communication skills for college coursework

* Students will be placed into a Math course or English course based on their ACT, SAT, or UIS placement test scores.

Applying for the Summer Scholars Program is simple! Follow these steps to secure your spot:

Step 1: Confirm Your Admission to UIS

You must be an incoming first-year freshman committed to attending UIS in the fall.

Step 2: Fill out Summer Scholars Interest Form

Complete the online interest form to let us know you're interested in the program.

Step 3: Complete the Summer Scholars Application

After submitting the interest form, you will receive an email with the application link.
Fill out and submit the official Summer Scholars application before the deadline.
If a placement test is required, you will be notified.

Step 4: Watch for Your Acceptance Notification & Next Steps

Once your application is reviewed, selected students will receive an acceptance email with instructions on the next steps in order to confirm your participation in the program.

Step 5: Register for Summer Scholars Courses & Invite

After completing your next steps, you will then receive an email on the courses you will be taking as well as an invite to our Parent and Student Virtual Info Session to walk through the program details and answer any final questions.

When Does the Summer Scholars Program Start This Year?

The Summer Scholars Program begins June 22nd, 2025 to August 15th, 2025.

What if I already have college credit for ENG 101 or ENG 102?

Ensure that official documentation (transcripts/test scores) is submitted to Records and Registration at UIS before the semester begins. Notify your academic advisor as well. If you have credit for ENG 101, you will enroll in a math course during the Summer Scholars Program. If you have credit for ENG 102, you will also be placed in a math course.

What if I already have credit for a college-level math course?

Submit official documentation (transcripts/test scores) to Records and Registration at UIS and inform your academic advisor. With existing college-level math credit, you will be enrolled in an English course during the Summer Scholars Program.

What if I do not need any of the classes being offered, but I still want to participate in the program?

Unfortunately, if you already have credit for both college-level English and math courses, you are not eligible to participate in this program.

Are there any other classes I can take instead of the ones listed on the Summer Scholars webpage?

No, the courses offered during Summers Scholars Program are limited to UNI 103, MAT 092, MAT 094, ENG 091, and ENG 101.

Does Summer Scholars participation replace the need to attend Orientation?

No, attendance at Orientation is mandatory for all students.

Which Orientation session should I attend?

Students participating in the Summer Scholars Program should register for the Monday, June 23rd Orientation session from the UIS Application Status Page (log on with status page credentials), which coincides with the on-campus portion of the program.

How do I take the placement test?

All Summer Scholars will take a math placement test upon arrival on campus.

General Math Hours (All 100-level math courses, as well as CCJ 342 and ECO 213):

Mondays 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, The Learning Hub*

*Please note: Walk-in hours start Week 2 (January 24th), and run through Wednesday of Finals Week (May 10th).

The Learning Hub walk-in hours will be held in the Solarium (check in at the front desk)
