How do I properly cite my sources?

The is a great place to get started. It has information on plagiarism and the citation styles you are most likely to encounter.

If you need more in-depth information, the is a great place to go as is the right here at UIS.

If you need additional help, you can always contact a

How do I put items (books, articles, videos) on reserve?

Make a reserve request by filling out the online forms found on the library's website under . To facilitate availability all reserves are delivered electronically, primarily through Canvas, the course management software used at UIS. Library staff will process the files and post them to Canvas for you.

For more information contact Pamela Scott or Sarah Sagmoen

If I attend Orientation do I have to attend the Welcome Week program?

Yes, UIS’s mandatory orientation program has three parts. The first part is the online orientation in Canvas which focuses on big-picture activities like advising and registration. Freshmen Welcome Week is the last part of our mandatory programs, held right before classes start August 16-18, that will help prepare you for your first semester of college.

Where can I find the classrooms in Brookens?

We do have classrooms within the library itself.

At the moment, only the big classroom (BRK 232) is in use and available for reservation: This classroom can be found on the 2nd floor of the library at the far end. If you need help locating this classroom, ask the main desk.

If you're looking for a classroom on the other side of Brookens, or on level 1, we have to help you find those.

For reference, here is a link to the Brookens Library maps.

Where can I find subject specific book/articles/databases?

Brookens Library has created a for each discipline taught at UIS. These guides are an excellent place to see what resources the Library has available in a particular subject area. Additionally, each research guide provides the contact information of the librarian that specializes in the subject; you can book a consultation with the librarian if further assistance is needed.

Where can I find primary sources?

Primary sources are the evidence of history, original records or objects created by participants or observers at the time historical events occurred or even well after events, as in memoirs and oral histories. These sources serve as the raw materials historians use to interpret and analyze the past.

Primary sources may include but are not limited to: letters, manuscripts, diaries, journals, newspapers, maps, speeches, interviews, documents produced by government agencies, photographs, audio or video recordings, born-digital items (e.g. emails), research data, and objects or artifacts (such as works of art or ancient roads, buildings, tools, and weapons).

To get started finding primary sources, we have created a to help you get started finding primary sources at UIS.

If you need further help, you can contact us at the Library Main Desk in person or over the phone (217-206-6606). Members of our SPARK team are available Tuesdays-Thursdays 6-9pm at the main desk who can help with research questions. Additionally, you can contact the for more in-depth help.

Where can I find out what textbooks I need for my classes?

Before syllabi become available on canvas, the is the best place to find out what textbooks you'll be needing.

As long as the professor has released what books they'll be using, it will appear on the bookstore website and you can search for your textbooks using your UIN (where it will give you a list of all the textbooks you need for all your classes), or using the class code/title.

Where can I find my course reserves in Canvas?

Click on Pages in the left hand column of menu choices and then look for the Page called Library Course Reserves. You will see a standard copyright warning about fair use of the materials; then scroll down to see the links to the materials your professor has placed on reserve. (Remember to create a University Box account if you haven't already done so. You will need the account in order to gain access to many of the items.)

Where can I find help with financial aid?

Contact the Office of Financial Assistance Services for information on financial aid, including the FAFSA form, loan refunds, and scholarships.

The has additional resources for navigating student loans.

Where can I find grant information?

The has many resources to assist nonprofits and patrons in locating grant information.

Our premier resource is the . This resource can be accessed from off campus for users with a NetID and password (ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½s, staff & faculty). For all others, it can only be accessed from on campus.

In addition, we have other database resources and some open source tools on
